* Abstract:
In this talk, I will highlight recent results from the work I have both led and supported for two James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) large programs: The Gould Belt Survey (GBS) and the Transient Survey.
The JCMT Gould Belt Survey is a large program dedicated to mapping and analysing the most prominent nearby (<500 pc) star forming regions at submillimetre wavelengths. Recently, a variety of papers have been released which catalogue dense continuum structures, correlate those sources with young stellar objects, and present investigations into the virial properties of nascent protostellar envelopes. Ongoing work includes comparisons between consistently mapped molecular clouds and observing the magnetic fields in a subset of these regions with the newly commissioned POL-2 instrument at the JCMT.
The JCMT Transient Survey is a three-year submillimetre continuum monitoring program of eight star forming regions previously observed by the GBS. Since December, 2016, this project has been dedicated to observing real-time submillimetre variability related to changes in protostellar accretion rates. So far, the known infrared periodic variable EC53 has been confirmed at wavelengths of 450 and 850 microns and several more variable candidates have been identified. Most recently, an automatic transient source detection system has been built for fast response to variability events.
